Kerala Badminton Club Launches ‘The Third Half’ Initiative to Promote Mental Health and Prevent Suicide

DUBLIN, IRELAND — In a proactive effort to address mental health challenges and prevent suicide within the local community, Kerala Badminton Club (KBC) has proposed a new community-based initiative titled “The Third Half,” designed to provide men with a safe, informal space to connect, share their concerns and access support.

The initiative comes amid growing concern about mental health struggles, social isolation and the pressures faced by men in their personal and professional lives. According to the club’s presentation, seven lives were lost to suicide in 2025, underscoring the urgent need for greater community awareness, early intervention and accessible support systems.

Building Connections Beyond the Badminton Court

Kerala Badminton Club represents more than 200 active members who participate in regular sporting activities throughout the week. The club believes that its strong network of friendships, cultural connections and shared routines can play a valuable role in supporting people who may be experiencing emotional distress.

“The Third Half” proposes weekly breakfast or coffee gatherings alongside existing badminton sessions. By creating a relaxed and familiar environment, the initiative aims to make conversations about mental health less intimidating and encourage men to seek help without fear of stigma or judgement.

The programme is built around the belief that people are often more comfortable discussing personal challenges during everyday social interactions than in formal clinical settings.

Addressing Isolation, Relationship Difficulties and Financial Stress

The initiative will focus on three key areas affecting community well-being: social isolation and separation from family, marriage and relationship difficulties, and job-related or financial pressures.

Organisers recognise that migration, cultural adjustment, family responsibilities and financial uncertainty can create significant emotional burdens. Men who live far from extended family networks may find it particularly difficult to discuss their struggles or identify appropriate support services.

Through informal conversations and stronger peer relationships, the club hopes to identify people who may be struggling silently and guide them towards suitable professional assistance when necessary.

Training Volunteers to Recognise Warning Signs

A central component of the proposal is the training of community volunteers in suicide prevention and mental health first aid.

The club plans to equip selected volunteers with recognised safeTALK suicide-alertness training and ASIST Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, subject to funding, training availability and appropriate arrangements.

These programmes are intended to help volunteers recognise warning signs, ask direct and compassionate questions about suicide risk, respond appropriately to people experiencing distress and connect them with professional support.

The proposal also emphasises personal safety planning, collaboration and appropriate referrals. Volunteers would not replace mental health professionals but would serve as an accessible first point of contact within the community.

Creating a Public Gateway to Support

Beyond the club’s membership, “The Third Half” aims to establish an accessible pathway for people from the wider community to seek support.

Planned outreach activities include social media awareness, community radio, printed contact cards and partnerships with local organisations. The initiative seeks to offer a welcoming first step for individuals who may be reluctant to approach formal services directly.

The proposal identifies several potential referral partners, including Cairde Dublin, Pieta, Samaritans Ireland and MABS Ireland. Their respective areas of support include ethnic minority health advocacy, crisis and suicide prevention services, emotional support and financial guidance. Formal referral arrangements and service availability would need to be confirmed with each organisation.

Four-Month Implementation Plan

The proposed programme outlines a phased four-month implementation strategy.

The first month would focus on securing funding and arranging training for five core committee members or community gatekeepers. The second month would mark the launch of weekly “The Third Half” gatherings, incorporating familiar foods and drinks to encourage participation.

The third month would concentrate on public outreach and the development of referral networks, while the fourth month would involve reviewing the programme, assessing participation, updating referral pathways and evaluating community safety outcomes.

A Community-Led Approach to Mental Health

By combining sport, social interaction, volunteer training and professional referral pathways, Kerala Badminton Club hopes to demonstrate how local community organisations can contribute to mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

The initiative places particular emphasis on early conversations, mutual support and reducing the stigma associated with asking for help.

At the heart of the proposal is a simple message: no one should have to struggle in silence when a community is willing to listen.

If implemented effectively, “The Third Half” could provide a practical model for other sports clubs and community groups seeking to strengthen social connections and improve access to mental health support.
