Local groups and volunteers highlight humanitarian action across Dublin and beyond.
Dublin, Ireland – Local humanitarian organisations, volunteers and community members came together at the Church of Scientology & Community Centre of Dublin to mark World Humanitarian Day and highlight practical efforts to assist people facing homelessness, disability, disaster and other difficult circumstances.
Established by the United Nations, World Humanitarian Day recognises the contribution of humanitarian workers and organisations worldwide. Reflecting that theme, the event featured presentations from groups active in the local community alongside examples of international relief and community service.
Cllr. Francis Timmons, Mayor of South Dublin, spoke on behalf of Clondalkin Helping Homeless, which he leads alongside Peace Commissioner Darren Lamont, outlining the organisation’s work with people experiencing homelessness and hardship and the practical support it provides to those in need.
Viktor Kozyrev, co-founder and Director of VOLA Enable, outlined the organisation’s work with people with disabilities and its focus on independence, inclusion and quality of life.
Silvia Fani spoke about the work of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers locally and internationally.
The event included a special acknowledgement to the Volunteer from Hilda Arenas, Founder of South East Asian Network Ireland and Chair of the Dún Laoghaire Integration Forum, who wrote: “Your continuous dedication to helping communities under the banner of ‘Something Can Be Done About It’ is truly commendable. Whether responding in times of crisis or providing everyday assistance that helps individuals improve their lives, your compassion and service do not go unnoticed.”
The afternoon concluded with an interactive workshop which introduced participants to “assists” — techniques used by Scientology Volunteer Ministers to address the mental and spiritual aspects of physical discomfort, illness and injury. Guests then had the opportunity to learn and practise several of the techniques.
Reflecting on the workshop, one guest said:
“The entire event, and especially the workshop, was very interesting and innovative, providing good examples to use in future group activities. I realised that it is fairly easy to change someone’s mood for the better, and the assist which helped achieve that was very useful.”
The occasion provided an opportunity to exchange ideas, explore different approaches to helping others and recognise the contribution of those working to support their communities.
The Volunteer Ministers programme was established in the 1970s by Mr L. Ron Hubbard, Founder of Scientology, to provide practical help to people facing difficulties in everyday life and in times of crisis. “Something Can Be Done About It” became its motto, and since its inception Volunteer Ministers have taken part in community initiatives and emergency responses around the world.
